Message from the Directors
Dear Friends:
Responding to your recent queries, be assured that our claims regarding treatment and cure of Rheumatoid Disease and related Arthritides are true. As much as 2 billion dollars are spent each year by Federal and State governments, and 15 billion via the public, to treat only the symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis and other Rheumatoid Diseases, when a vast majority of those afflicted could be cured at a very reasonable cost with non-toxic, or at least less-toxic, than traditional, damaging treatments.
However, there is no way to know how much of your problem can be alleviated without trying.
You need a doctor or doctors who will work with you in search of your particular needs, and you must begin to learn. "LEARNING" is what our articles and books are intended to help you do.
Thousands have found our recommended treatments safe and effective. If you have not gotten well with your present treatments, then you must continue your search, whether with us or elsewhere. Because someone doesn't know how to help you toward wellness, doesn't mean that you should quit searching. We think we can help, and we do with a vast number of those properly treated by our recommendations- up to 80%.
Congratulations on arriving this far - We wish you good health!
The Board of Directors, Arthritis Trust of America
PERRY A. CHAPDELAINE, B.A., M.A.
Executive Director/Secretary
Perry Chapdelaine was born February 6, 1925 in St. Paul, MN. He received his B.A. at Iowa State Teachers College (now University of North Iowa) in 1946, and his M.A. at George Peabody College for Teachers (now part of Vanderbilt University) in 1947, both majors in mathematics. He taught mathematics at college level in several universities, worked as systems analyst in computer systems design for the U.S. Air Force, and later obtained a nearly half million dollar grant as Senior Project Officer from the National Science Foundation for development of Computer Assisted Instruction, such techniques now commonly found in computers everywhere.
Perry's interest in helping folks began when he developed so-called incurable, crippling rheumatoid arthritis, and was told he would soon be crippled, as his arthritis was of the "galloping" kind. The story on how Perry got well is told in the article: "Rheumatoid Arthritis: Two Case Histories". Through Jack M. Blount, M.D., a co-founder of this foundation, Perry was healed. Along with doctors and other layfolks, Perry helped found The Roger Wyburn-Mason and Jack M. Blount Foundation for the Eradication of Rheumatoid Disease, now called either The Rheumatoid Disease Foundation or The Arthritis Trust of America.
Perry Chapdelaine has written Science Fiction, novels, and other stories. Some of his work is here. Click Here

REX NEWNHAM, Ph.D., D.O., N.D.
Executive Director, United Kingdom
Arthritis and Rheumatism Natural Therapy Research Association (England)Founder and President
Rex Newnham, Ph.D., D.O., N.D. was born in 1920 in New Zealand and then moved on to Australia. He served six years war service in the Middle East and New Guinea, rising to rank of Captain. His work was to ensure safety of ammunition and bomb disposal. After WWII, he married and studied of medicine in Melbourne, Australia. He had to quit after 2-1/2 years, working as a carpenter building houses. In 1950 Dr. Newnham taught science, chemistry, agricultural botany and soil science, while studying for a science degree majoring in botany. In 1964 he found that boron would heal his arthritis, and also that of others. Retired from teaching in 1978, he studied naturopathy, homeopathy and nutrition, and set up practice in Melbourne, where he organized double blind hospital trials to test the boron tablets on others. Because of hostility toward his non-patented discoveries, Dr. Newnham moved to New Zealand from whence he also started his epidemiological research, traveling nine times around the world to test and correlate minerals, including boron, in soils and relate them to degree of arthritis in the related population.Having established a significant positive correlation between lack of boron in soil and food plants grown in the same soil, and increasing incidence of arthritis, Dr. Newnham moved to England, earned a Ph.D. in Nutrition in London in 1990, and now serves to guide people with arthritis and other diseases. (See Dr. Newnham's book, Away With Arthritis), available through this foundation, and the article "Boron and Arthritis". His findings have been accepted worldwide by the vast majority of physicians dedicated to the practice of complementary and alternative medicine.

WILLIAM H. PHILPOTT, M.D.
Scientist Adviser
William H. Philpott, M.D. has specialty training and practice in psychiatry, neurology, electroencephalography, nutrition, environmental medicine and toxicology.
He is a founding member of the Academy of Orthomolecular Psychiatry. He is a fellow of the Orthomolecular Psychiatric Society and the Society of Environmental Medicine and Toxicology.
Between 1970 and 1975, he did a research project searching for the causes of major mental illnesses and degenerative diseases, which resulted in the publication of the books, Brain Allergies and Victory Over Diabetes.
Retiring in 1990 after 40 years of medical practice, he has engaged in research as a member of an Institutional Review Board, which follows FDA guidelines. In this capacity, he guides physicians and gathers data on the treatment and prevention of degenerative diseases using magnetic therapy.
The Linus Pauling Award was presented to William H. Philpott, M.D. in 1998 by the Orthomolecular Health Society, “for his scientific leadership and scholarship spanning the entire history of orthomolecular medicine.”
Dr. Philpott says, “When I graduated from medical school, the guest speaker stated, “We have taught you what we know. It may well be that half of what we have taught you is not so. But we don’t know which half is so and which half is not so”. I learned so much in medical school that I was proud of my acclamation of knowledge. Was this speaker for real or simply a learned clinician acting out a false humility? As I marched down the aisle of graduation from medical school, I was proud of my increased amount of knowledge I had gained. I was especially proud of knowing about medications that were known to relieve headaches. Surely among these medications for headaches was an answer for my mother’s headaches. I thought that now I have a solution to the lonely hours I spent as a preschooler while my mother was in bed in a dark room. I was all alone wondering how I could help my mother.
“I specialty trained in neurology and psychiatry and had a flourishing practice in these specialties. After fifteen years of practice, I began to wonder why we had so few answers that worked. ruses, especially Epstein-Barr, cytomegalovirus and human.
William H. Philpott, M.D.’s Response upon receiving the Linus Pauling Award “I really thank you a lot for this. I just wanted to say that Linus Pauling was a friend of mine and he wrote the foreward to my book, Brain Allergies and I thought I would just read a little bit of this so that you would see his attitude towards my work.”
“’The concept that a change in behavior and in mental health can result from changing the concentrations of various substances that are normally present in the brain is an important one. This concept is the basis of orthomolecular psychiatry, a subject that is treated in considerable detail by Dr. William Philpott and Dwight Kalita in their book, Brain Allergies. The other general concept, also a closely related one, is that of human ecology. The idea is that substances in our environment can have a profound effect on mental health and behavior. These can be introduced into the environment as a result of our technical culture.
“I just wanted you to realize that Linus Pauling did appreciate ecology and nutrition both, and said so in this forward to my book. We shared that as a common interest. I have been the one that was responsible for introducing ecology to orthomolecular medicine and the orthomolecular ideas to ecology medicine. I have been a catalyst in getting orthomolecular medicine and environmental toxicology medicine together. This organization needs to, and is, furthering the interest of Linus Pauling and this very important focus in medicine. It will make a difference and I want to congratulate all of you for this interest; keep it growing because it will become a more substantial part of medicine.”
Dr. Philpott’s work with magnetics and allergies -- including many disease conditions -- is found on our website in the “Research” section.

ED WENDLOCHER, BS
Scientist Adviser
Ed Wendlocher’s involvement with arthritis began at age ten when he was diagnosed to have juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. With regularly scheduled hypodermic needle draining of both knees and cortisone shots, he struggled through his Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa. college days earning a BS degree in Engineering. While taking the maximum amounts of both prescription and non-prescription drugs to control his arthritis his early career emphasized environmental, health and safety positions. While working at a major pharmaceutical company in New Jersey, he became experienced in health and safety as related to pharmaceutical products and was able to investigate research publications on arthritis. He had personally noticed a relationship between his arthritis symptoms and the foods he ate but was able to find reports of only simplistic, superficicial studies of diet and arthritis (low calorie, vegetarian, low salt, low sugar, etc. diets).
When his mother fell to her death on the cellar stairs due to her severely deformed arthritic feet, he became driven to thoroughly investigate how foods affect arthritis. He founded ARTHRITIS HELP CENTERS, a research group of doctors, scientists and volunteers who have been dedicated to carefully and thoroughly investigating the affects of foods on arthritis for more than twenty years. This group has accurately and reliably identified a number of common food ingredients found to cause SEVERE PAIN, SWELLING AND STIFFNESS in many people; especially those with arthritis and the elderly.
ARTHRITIS HELP CENTERS, now called Food and Health Research Group, has prepared a 25 page guidebook which lists the problem ingredients, shows the foods which usually contain them, and gives helpful information on how to avoid them. This guidebook, Foods Found to Cause Pain, Swelling and StiffnessTM, is available from Food and Health Research Group, Box 768, Wharton, NJ 07885-0768.

JOHN PARKS TROWBRIDGE M.D. FACAM
www.healthCHOICESnow.com
Scientist Adviser
John Parks Trowbridge, M.D. attended Stanford University as a National Merit Scholar and California State Scholar, graduating in 1970 with an A. B. degree in Biological Sciences. After training in medical laboratory technology, he attended the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, finishing in 1976 with an M. D. degree. After a general surgery internship at Mt. Zion Hospital and Medical Center in San Francisco, he briefly studied urological surgery at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in the Texas Medical Center in Houston. In 1979, he started a general medical practice in Humble, a Houston suburb. By 1981, Dr. Trowbridge was turning to the study of how nutritional changes – with supplements and diet – could improve the condition of patients with chronic degenerative diseases ..... the ones for which operations provide little relief, the ones for which medications are needed for years, the ones that finally kill people after years of suffering.
In 1985, he was awarded a Diplomate in Preventive Medicine by the Medical Research Institute of the Florida Institute of Technology for graduate studies in nutrition. Dr. Trowbridge became certified as a specialist in the removal of toxic heavy metals by the American Board of Chelation Therapy in 1985 and by the (now defunct) American Board of Biologic Reconstructive Therapy (arthritis and pain medicine) in 1993; he served as an examiner for both boards. He served as director and officer of the American College for Advancement in Medicine (1984 - 1991) and was awarded recognition as a Fellow of the College in 1991.
Dr. Trowbridge also served as chairman of the board of governors of the National Health Federation in 1989 and as president of the Great Lakes College of Clinical Medicine (GLCCM) in 1995. From 1996 through 1998, Dr. Trowbridge was program chair for the advanced chelation training seminars in Heavy Metal Toxicology: Diagnosis and Treatment. In 2000, he was re-elected to the board of directors of GLCCM and appointed editor of their newsletter; in 2001, the society changed its name to the International College of Integrative Medicine (ICIM). In 1995, he was appointed to the Medical Advisory Board of the Arthritis Trust, having become skilled in using this specialized treatment program in his practice since 1983.
More recent studies have involved "anti-aging" and life-enhancing technologies, to "add life to your years as well as years to your life." Popular as a public speaker and radio/TV guest, in 1990 he hosted his own nationally-syndicated radio talk show "Finally Feeling Better." Of his several published articles, one dealing with life’s stresses for the Rotarian Magazine was reprinted in several languages. In 1980 - 81, he published one of the first "health newsletters," called The Company Doc. His many accomplishments are recognized in listings in over 3 dozen volumes of "Who’s Who ---," including Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
Among his several books are three bestsellers: Bantam Books’ million-copy-plus The Yeast Syndrome (1986), Chelation Therapy (1985), and Do What You Want To Do (1996). A unique "book-on-tape" on chelation therapy, titledLIVING WELL PAST 50: Rejuvenate Your Heart and Arteries, was released in 1988, featuring 3 hours of patient interviews and "plain English"explanations of the chelation program. The Rumble in Humble: Heart Surgery and All that JAZZ!, published in 1997, reviewed diagnostic and treatment issues in the modern treatment of heart and blood vessel diseases, including "alternative" or "complementary" approaches. His newest book, anticipated publication date late 2002, covers innovative and effective treatment strategies for those suffering with chronic headaches (including migraines) & emphasizing the use of "NCR," neuro-cranial restructuring, a remarkable technique to rebalance skeletal posture.
At the LIFE CENTER HOUSTON medical office, near the Bush Intercontinental Airport in Humble, Dr. Trowbridge focuses on helping "people to get out of their pain and get on with their life." He encourages inquiries from people suffering with long-standing degenerative diseases (requiring continuing medication or repeated operations), unusual illness problems, and those limited by or suffering with headaches, neck pains, low back pains, and other joint injuries or diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and other "immune system" diseases. RAUL VERGINI, M.D.
Scientist Adviser, Italy
Raul Vergini, M.D. was born in Predappio (FO), Italy on March 8, 1958. He received his doctorate in medicine at the University of Bologna in 1984, beginning immediately private practice in classical homeopathy. He says, "I had the luck to learn homeopathy, since 1980, from an old retired homeopathist." Homeopathy is still his principle activity. At the very beginning of his practice, Dr. Vergini also took an interest in alternative cancer therapies and in nutrition, including vitamins and mineral supplementations. He wrote his first article about magnesium chloride in 1986 for a homeopathic magazine. In February 1994 the Italian most important publisher of books about "alternative" health practices published his book Curarsi con il magnesio (Healing With Magnesium) that details the properties and the use of magnesium chloride in human (and veterinary) therapy.
Since 1989 Dr. Vergini has also taken an interest in hormone balancing, including thyroid, progesterone, DHEA, etc. His interests have also included the arthritis protocols recommended by this foundation as well as those of the Life-Extension Foundation. Dr. Vergini is a member of Mensa (the international "high IQ society"), and of the New York Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Vergini’s treatment procedure using Magnesium Chloride Hexahydrate Therapy can be found on the articles page as well as in our Winter 1995 newsletter.
RICHARD A. KUNIN
Scientist Adviser
Dr.Kunin is a physician, psychiatrist and pioneer in the field of nutri-molecular medicine, an approach to health by means of laboratory measurement of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and other substances that are essential for life and for health. A founder and past-president of the Orthomolecular Medical Society, he is author of the best-selling book, MegaNutrition, (McGraw-Hill). Dr. Kunin may be contacted at 2698 Pacific Ave.; San Francisco, CA 94115; (415) 346-250
He was president of the International Association of Ortho-molecular Physicians. Educated at the University of Minnesota, he received his B.S. in 1953 and his M.D. degree in 1955. He served two years as a Captain in the United States Army Medical Corps, and was psychiatrist for the 7th Division at the DMZ as well as on the staff at the 121 Evac Hospital in ASCOM city, Korea, later also serving at Valley-Forge Hospital in Pennsylvania.Dr. Kunin was the first clinician to combine computer analysis of diet with laboratory diagnosis of nutrient levels in body tissues, including hair analysis, being recognized in 1972 as a national leader by Prevention Magazine. This procedure is now widely used by many clinicians. His interest in mineral metabolism led to the important discovery that manganese treatment is often successful in otherwise permanent cases of drug-induced tardive dyskinesia (involuntary movements). He was also first to demonstrate that aspirin blocks the niacin flush, and was first to suggest that the anti-schizophrenic action of niacin was related to prostaglandin metabolism.
Dr. Kunin’s most practical contribution will probably be recognized as the LISTEN TO YOUR BODY DIETTM, a method of optimizing personal nutrition by systematic adjustments of carbohydrate, fat and protein and taught by means of a unique food diagram. The application of advanced knowledge and technology that integrates nutrition and medicine is the focus of Dr. Kunin’s career now.

FOR INFORMATION AND NEW APPOINTMENTS CALL: 703-255-0313.
Warren M. Levin, MD (H) has been treating Lyme disease since the mid 90’s. Since 1998 he has practiced in Ridgefield, CT and Wilton, CT. According to the Wilton Bulletin, 54% of the Families in Wilton have Lyme disease! Please realize that is only the percent of Families in which the diagnosis has been recognized and reported to the Health Department. How many other individuals have had the symptoms including Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Headaches, Arthritis, Muscle Pain, Cognitive impairment, Neurological Symptoms etc., but have not been to a doctor, or were not tested for Lyme disease or had a false negative test?
Dr. Levin, himself, has had Lyme disease twice, but successfully treated it early on both occasions. This makes 3 important points:
1) Early treatment is short and effective.
2) Unlike most other infections, long term immunity is not guaranteed after recovery or immunization.
3) It is impossible (outside of a very few research facilities) to differentiate a new infection from a recurrence of an old one that has been “hiding” or “dormant” in the body after treatment which has been stopped too soon. Knowing when to stop is often more difficult than making the diagnosis.
Dr. Levin works with each patient on an individual basis. He sees only 5-6 patients a day. Generally he will spend 1-¼ to 2 hours or more with patients on the first visit depending on the complexity of the case, how long they have had Lyme, how they have been treated for it, and what improvement has been made and what their current status is. The next step generally involves extensive lab work and a complete Physical Exam.
Tests must be done for 4 other infections that can be transmitted simultaneously with the Lyme organism: Babesia, Bartonella, Ehrlichia and Mycoplasma. Many cases of “persistent Lyme” turn out to be one of these “co-infections” that require different antibiotic therapy.
When all tests are done and returned we schedule a second extended visit to go over the results of all the tests and lay out a map for proper treatment to begin. One of the additional areas that Dr. Levin works with is the Neurotoxins that can remain behind after the Lyme is gone. See website: www.chronicneurotoxins.com. Thus, the VCS test that Dr. Shoemaker has developed is routinely followed by our patients. In addition, in order to use the therapy with Cholestyramine Dr. Levin worked for 6 months with a compounding pharmacy to develop a toxic free Cholestyramine with Xylitol instead of Aspartame or Sugar. Another major problem that is frequently ignored is overgrowth of the yeast organisms know as Candida. They are virtually certain to be present with the prolonged use of antibiotics as is typical in the treatment of Lyme disease, and can be a major contributor to the symptoms in such patients. Prophylactic use of “probiotic organisms” and yeast suppressant herbs or antifungal prescriptions should be part of routine care.
In addition to antibiotic therapy, Dr. Levin uses an intensive nutritional program to help the body’s innate defense mechanisms. Vitamins, minerals, herbs, oils and other nutrients are given orally and by injection when indicated to shift the balance of power in the body’s favor. Herbal products are now being recognized as adjuncts and – in some instances – alternatives to antibiotic therapy.
Dr. Levin’s approach is a totally individualized approach with each and every patient that he sees. He considers himself to be a partner who works closely with each patient. His philosophy is to work with many options, helping to educate the patient, but the ultimate decisions as to treatment rest with the patient.
As you all too well know, there is no certifying Board or Agency that qualifies “Lyme literate Doctors.” [LLD’s] However, Dr. Levin is a current member of ILADS and has attended many meetings on Lyme and other Tick Borne Diseases [TBD’s] over the last four years.
Dr. Levin is on a first name basis with many of the East Coast leaders of the organization – Burrascano, Jones, Horowitz, Liegner, Fallon, Raxlen and Shoemaker and he can call any of them in unusual situations. He is not afraid to say “I don’t know.”
Dr. Levin Graduated from Jefferson Medical College, and opened the first Alternative Medical Center in NYC in 1974. He is recognized by his colleagues as the Dean of Alternative Medicine in the East. He was a founding member of ACAM, the Chelation organization and is a Diplomat and Fellow of the American Board of Environmental Medicine, as well as a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition. His 30 years of experience in the field of Alternative Medicine and his ground breaking work in the field of chronic yeast and the connection to parasites that go undiagnosed and untreated made him a recognized authority in Integrative Medicine. He is one of very few Alternative Physicians to be listed in the Marquis’ Who’s Who in American Medicine and Healthcare and Who’s Who in America.
He is excited about bringing his years of expertise in the field of Integrative and Environmental Medicine coupled with his experience in treating Lyme disease from the Northeast to [Virginia].
